Sinopsis
Bagaimana jika Jepang di masa feodal tepatnya di abad ke-19 didatangi
makhluk asing dari angkasa luar? Sudah pasti terjadi gonjang-ganjing dan
geger budaya ketika Jepang mulai mengenal teknologi yang jauh lebih
canggih dari pada teknologi Bumi zaman itu. Ternyata makhluk asing itu
ingin mengeksplorasi kekayaan bumi Jepang dan pemimpin Jepang saat itu,
Shogun itu tidak berani melawan sehingga setuju menjalin hubungan dengan
para makhluk asing yang disebut Amanto.
Kisahnya dimulai 20 tahun sejak kedatangan Amanto itu, yaitu berkisar
pada tokoh seorang samurai yang bernama Sakata Gintoki. Ia mendirikan
sebuah agensi Yorozuya, sebuah agensi yang menerima pekerjaan apapun. Ia
bekerja sama dengan Shimura Shinpachi yang menjadi muridnya dan seorang
gadis manis yang bernama Kagura. Ternyata Kagura itu adalah makhluk
asing dari klan Yato, sebuah klan yang paling kuat di jagat raya.
Mereka bersedia menerima pekerjaan apapun asalkan mendapatkan bayaran
yang sesuai. Namun Gintoki dan kedua temannya sering mendapatkan masalah
yang konyol, terutama jika berurusan dengan teman mereka, Kotaro
Katsura. Rupaya Katsura ingin menghancurkan pemerintahan Shogun. Belum
lagi mereka juga harus berurusan dengan pasukan polisi Shinsegumi yang
biasanya menjadi rekan dalam kasus-kasus pengejaran kriminal berbahaya,
namun bisa merepotkan mereka jika dia terlibat.
